Today, young people actively strive for self-realization and professional growth by participating in international competitions and projects. Participation in international competitions becomes a key element in shaping a career path, opening doors to new knowledge, experience and opportunities. The 3rd year students of the Department of International and Business Law of the Ala-Too International University (AIU) won the nomination “Best Combined Memorial” (Best Memorandum) at the national rounds of the Central Asian countries Jessup Moot Court Competition 2024 – the student competition of gaming trials in international law named after Philip C. Jessop, which took place at the KIMEP University, Kazakhstan.
Representatives of more than 700 law schools from 100 countries and jurisdictions take part in this competition. Among the 11 participating teams from Central Asian countries, the AIU team, consisting of five students: Nurayim Doolotbekova, Elina Asekova, Aidai Zhooshbekova, Aizhan Mukhtar kyzy and Aidai Rysbekova, demonstrated a high level of professionalism in studying complex aspects of international law, public speaking skills and the ability to analyze legal documents. They also developed significant procedural documents, including a statement of claim and a response opinion, demonstrating a deep understanding of legal aspects and wit in public speaking. According to the students, AIU played a key role in their preparation, providing the necessary conditions and resources for effective work on the competition:
Our success in the competition is the result of our teamwork and dedication.
Participation in the Jessup Moot Court Competition 2024 has brought us valuable experience in international public law, strengthening our analytical and public speaking skills. Participating in any Moot Court is a complex process, and the team must work twice as hard to achieve the best results. Since September, we have been preparing diligently, regularly discussing the case and developing strategies. Our team had to face the problem of lack of time, as significant efforts were directed at studying the norms of international law, forming arguments and exploring gaps. We stayed late at the university to prepare well. We have studied various sources and developed reasoned memoranda for both sides of the dispute. However, we are aware that knowledge of law and the ability to apply it are important, and we are confident that the time spent on preparation is an investment in our knowledge and skills. Our success in the competition is the result of our teamwork and dedication. The expertise, knowledge and guidance of our trainers and lecturers of the Department of International and Business Law of the AIU proved valuable in the process of our training. Their help was crucial, especially in the last months before the competition, when we actively improved our oral presentations. Thanks to an internationally oriented legal education in English, AIU has opened the doors to the world of major international projects for us. We would like to express our deep gratitude to our coaches and lecturers for their contribution to our success and dedication.

According to the coaches of the AIU team, Azamat Suleymanov and Bedii Gurzhan, one of the most difficult tasks for them was to form a single team from five different individuals, since this requires not only professional knowledge, but also a deep understanding of human psychology, the ability to find a common language and inspire a common goal.
Observing the success of their students, the coaches talked about the process of preparing for a large-scale competition:
Since the beginning of the academic year, together with Ayana Orozbayeva, a Moot Court 2023 participant, we have started selecting students for our team, paying special attention to their desire and readiness. The workload of students was a significant problem, since participation in the Moot Court requires not only time, but also independent study of topical issues of international law. Despite these difficulties, our students showed outstanding results, receiving first place for the best memorandum of the plaintiff and the best memorandum of the defendant, which is an undoubted testimony to their skills in written arguments. Thanks to the outstanding results in Kazakhstan, students have the opportunity to participate in the international rounds of Jessup 2024 in Washington, USA, which will be held from March 30th to April 7th, 2024. Coaching on the Moot Court is a unique experience that combines challenges and joys. Joy comes when you see the results of this work: students' self-confidence, their ability to analyze and, of course, success in competitions. We are proud of our team and grateful to each participant for their contribution, perseverance and desire to grow. We would like to express our special gratitude to the Department of Jurisprudence and the Dean's Office of Humanities for their valuable support. We look forward to future challenges and opportunities to prove ourselves on the international stage.

The competition was organized by the International Law Students Association in order to provide students with practical experience in the application and observance of international law. The active participation of students in this event is an important stage of their professional development, which allows them to apply theoretical knowledge in practice and gain valuable experience in the field of legal dispute resolution.
